Ambiguous Team Foundation Server (TFS) error "Source control provider could not be initialized"

On the Dynamics GP Support and Services blog, Microsoft's Terry Heley noted that as many people begin to set up their development areas to TFS online, they are being met with a standard vague error message that plays a lot of different roles. 

Heley offered a list of items to review when you receive the following error: "Source control provider could not be initialized."

For if the things to review is a whitepaper that discusses how to use TFS with Dexterity for your source code repository

We don't have documentation specifically for setting up Visual Studio Online. We have typically followed the existing whitepaper above for TFS and Dexterity.
