This study focuses on the challenges faced by small and medium-sized businesses – and by the corporate and private-practice accountants who try to guide SMB businesses through the rocky shoals of tax compliance in the face of constantly changing rules, regulations and rates. This study also focuses on a series of emerging solutions that may be uniquely well-suited to the SMBs’ needs for calculating, collecting, remitting and reporting on sales tax compliance.
For the purposes of this study, how sales tax compliance is impacting the small and midsize
business market – and the accounting profession – was analyzed based on interviews with dozens of tax practitioners, SMB consultants, government regulators, and other tax policy
authorities. Findings were also based on reviews of much of the significant literature
published about the topic since 2000.
